Bustin' Down the Door (2008) (Add this to your LIST)
Release Date:
Plot:
For those who either never frequented the beach or maybe lived somewhere in the middle of America, surfing would seem as a niche sport for laid back beach bums who live either in Southern California or the North Shore of Hawaii. Little would these people know--and maybe even care--that professional surfing is a multibillion dollar industry that has steadily grown on beaches worldwide, holding global competitions sponsored by major corporations and giving prestige to many athletes who carry a board and ride waves. But how did this sport transform from a very localized activity to a global phenomena “Bustin’ Down the Door” attempts to answer this question in this solid and insightful documentary.
Named after a controversial surf magazine article written by one of the film’s subjects, “Bustin’ Down The Door” tells the story of a young group of Australian and South African surfers who arrived on the North shores of Hawaii and set out to change the landscape of pro-surfing. Centering on the three most successful of the group, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Shaun Tomson and Mark Richards, the film travels back to the early 1970s, where surfing was merely relegated to a “counter-culture” lifestyle and the small tournaments were dominated by the native Polynesian surfers of Hawaii. Young, arrogant, and with a strong desire to further the sport, these young men--coming mainly from poor and rough upbringings of their own--were not afraid to bump heads and buck local traditions in order to become best. Employing newer techniques not seen on Hawaiian shores, (apparently cutting back on a wave was never really done competitively before 1974?) the boys quickly rose through the ranks and brought attention to both surfing promoters and magazines.
This all, of course, began to rub the local population the wrong way. Here were three white, confident, and well, bratty young men drawing all the attention and bringing legitimacy to a sport that had, for a long time, been a proud and spiritual exercise for Hawaiians for many years. Coincidentally (or not), the film itself pushes the Hawaiian's surfing history aside too--hardly any history is touched upon in the film, making the foreigners seem like the sport’s Great White Hope. Sure, some of the Hawaiian local legends are touched upon here, but aside from some valuable insight from surfer Barry Kanaiaupuni, the real focus of the native Hawaiians in the film are when a small number of them are portrayed as thugs, which also happens to be the most interesting and controversial part of the film. When Rabbit Bartholomew writes an egotistic and softheaded article boasting about the Aussies while putting down the locals, a recently formed Hawaiian surfing club, colloquially known as the “black Shorts," rough up rabbit and his crew, threatening their lives and forcing them to go into hiding.
Troubles were eventually settled and the boys went on to win multiple World Championships, leaving these guys as the pioneers of a sport they set out to change. Director Jeremy Gosch was fortunate to be able to support this story with plenty of beautifully shot Super 8 footage of the guys--mostly done by the surfers and probably friends--and taken from many ‘70’s surfing films. To see these surfers take on a 25-30 foot wave is quite impressive, and you don’t really need to be a fan of the sport to appreciate the danger they put themselves in every time the paddle out from the Hawaiian north shore. The film’s narration is done by actor Ed Norton, but his input is used sparingly and all but disappears in the film’s climax--a wise choice by the filmmaker. If “Bustin’ Down The Door” wanted to make a real mass appeal, it probably should’ve added a more well rounded history of the sport, including the story of the Polynesian people’s contributions, but as a small niche title preaching to the converted, this is a nice slice of history through the eyes of the game changing pioneers of the sport.

Echelon Vendetta (2009) (Add this to your LIST)
Release Date: Unknown
Plot:
Based on the novel by David Stone which "The Wackness" writer Jonathan Levine will adapt. This from DavidStoneBooks.com:
An International spy thriller of the highest order that traverses from Venice to London to Washington, D.C.
Micha Dalton is not paid to ask questions. He's the man the CIA sends to clean up the mess when something goes wrong-an agent gets in trouble, or worse. But when his colleague and friend Porter Nauman turns up dead in an idyllic Tuscan hill town as a result of an apparent and unimaginably gruesome suicide, Dalton can't help but ask questions. And when Nauman's family is subsequently slaughtered back home in London, Dalton can sit back no longer.
Moving from Venice to London to Washington, D.C., to the unbearably beautiful mountains of the American West, Dalton tracks the specter who, with a penchant for intricate knifework influenced by Native American mysticism, is killing a disparate group of agents, former agents, and contract men-all of whom seem to have a connection to ECHELON, a mysterious company operation. The murders appear to be acts of retribution, but for what?
Elegant, horrifying, and chillingly suspenseful, The Echelon Vendetta will keep you enthralled, through it's final, supremely satisfying twist.
