Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" posted the best opening weekend of any movie musical ever with an estimated $42 million take from 3,623 theatres. The Kenny Ortega helmed project starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale averaged a cool $11,593 per theatre.
Lionsgate's "Saw V" bloody offering finished in second place with $30.5 million from 3,060 venues at an average of $9,967. David Hackl takes over the helmer's chair from Darren Lynn Bousman. Screenplay is from Patrick Melton and Mark Dunstan, writers of the previous "Saw" film.
Last weekend's leader "Max Payne" dropped 57% in its sophomore weekend at play with $7.6 million grossed. Total pulled in so far for the Fox distributed actioner starring Mark Wahlberg and based on the popular game, is around $29.6 million.
Other Disney family flick "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" showed a slight 39% change in its fourth weekend at the box office with $6.9 million posted.
The Edward Norton and Colin Farrell crime drama "Pride and Glory" finished off the top fiive films with an estimated $6.3 million post from 2,585 theatres.
Clint Eastwood helmed "Changeling" starring Angelina Jolie was sent into a mere fifteen venues and ended up grossing a whopping $501,615 for Universal Pictures. That's a staggering $33,441 per theatre folks.
Also making an incredible impression was Logo Features' "Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom" which debuted in just five theatres with a strong $101,000 at a $32,260 average.
Sony Pictures Classics' indie offerings "SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK" starring Philip Seymour Hoffman powered in $172,926 from 9 theatres at a $19,214 and "I've Loved You So Long" turned in $66,747 from 6 theatres for the studio.
