A host of new releases contend for their slice of the box office pie. We’ll start from the release debuting in the largest amount of theatres and work our way down.
Warner Bros. Pictures sends out their horror “Whiteout” which is helmed by Dominic Sena; a helmer with several strong credits under his belt including “Swordfish,” “Gone in Sixty Seconds” and 1993’s “Kalifornia.”  Film opens in  over 2,700 venues and is screenwritten by John and Erich Hoeber as well as Chad and Carey W. Hayes based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka.
PLOT:
For U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, things are about to get even more dangerous. The only law enforcement in this unforgiving territory, she has just been sent to investigate a body on the ice. Antarctica's first homicide. A shocking discovery in itself, it will plunge her into an even more bizarre mystery and the revelation of secrets long-buried under the endless ice...secrets that someone believes are still worth killing for.

As Stetko races to find the killer before he finds her, winter is already closing in. In the deadly Antarctic whiteout, she won't see him till he's a breath away.
Summit Entertainment’s horror “Sorority Row” finds over 2,500 theatres and stars Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Rumer Willis, Jamie Chung, Audrina Patridge and Carrie Fisher.
Stewart Hendler (“Whisper”) directs from the writing by Josh Stolberg, Peter Goldfiner and Mark Rosman.
PLOT:
When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret.
Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself” is sent out by Lionsgate into over 2,100 theatres. Perry heads a cast which includes Taraji P. Henson, Brian J. White, Mary J. Blige and Hope Olaide Wilson.
PLOT:
When Madea, America’s favorite pistol-packing grandma, catches sixteen-year-old Jennifer and her two younger brothers looting her home, she decides to take matters into her own hands and delivers the young delinquents to the only relative they have: their aunt April. A heavy-drinking nightclub singer who lives off of Raymond, her married boyfriend, April wants nothing to do with the kids. But her attitude begins to change when Sandino, a handsome Mexican immigrant looking for work, moves into April’s basement room. Making amends for his own troubled past, Sandino challenges April to open her heart. And April soon realizes she must make the biggest choice of her life: between her old ways with Raymond and the new possibilities of family, faith…and even true love.

An uplifting drama infused with music and Tyler Perry’s trademark mixture of laughter and heart, I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF stars Perry, Taraji P. Henson, Brian White, Hope Olaide Wilson, Adam Rodriguez, Kwesi Nii-Lante Boakye and Frederick Siglar, and features dramatic and musical performances by Gladys Knight, Marvin Winans and Mary J. Blige, who performs an original song penned by chart-topping R&B writer/performer/producer, Ne-Yo.
Animated “9” directed and written by Shane Acker based on his Academy Award®-winning short film is produced by the likes of Tim Burton and “Wanted” helmer Timur Bekmambetov. Film unspools on Wednesday, September 9th into 1,638 locations. Voice talent includes Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau and Christopher Plummer.
PLOT:
The time is the too-near future. Powered and enabled by the invention known as the Great Machine, the world's machines have turned on mankind and sparked social unrest, decimating the human population before being largely shut down.

But as our world fell to pieces, a mission began to salvage the legacy of civilization; a group of small creations was given the spark of life by a scientist in the final days of humanity, and they continue to exist post-apocalypse. Another of their own, #9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), emerges and displays leadership qualities that may help them survive and possibly even thrive.

With their group so few, these "stitchpunk" creations must summon individual strengths well beyond their own proportions in order to outwit and fight against still-functioning machines, one of which is a marauding mechanized beast. In the darkness just before the dawn, #9 rallies everyone of his number to band together.

While showcasing a stunning "steampunk"-styled visual brilliance, 9 dynamically explores the will to live, the power of community, and how one soul can change the world.
