Last, we gave you our interview with “Legion” star Paul Bettany , next up – the confident Tyrese Gibson, last seen in the mega-blockbusting “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” has a seat for this round. Gibson plays Kyle Williams in the fantasy thriller helmed and co-written by Scott Sanders.
The film sees theatres on January 22nd next year.
On being so energetic he says “You know what? I think people take life way too serious. At the end of the day, it’s just a real blessing to be able to work with film, or work on anything. So you can either look at it as a job because you’re being hired to do something or you can look at it as – what an amazing opportunity to further my career and work with a new set of people and be in this new location and have all of these new energies around me and I just love it man. I just hope they never stop calling me.”
He talks about his character – “Kyle Williams is just on his way somewhere and ends up pulling over for directions and gets sucked into the matrix. I mean it just gets wild…all of these spirits all of this stuff is going on, trying to stop the birth of this child. The whole time you’re just going to see me complaining. When you see the movie…’can you get me the hell outta here? I don’t care about the birth of this child’ and all this. I mean I never really get involved in what’s happening, I’m just complaining about everything. I’m dealing with a court case with my child which I’m a little familiar with my wife right now. But I’m on my way to court and I just pull over for directions because I’m lost and get sucked into the matrix.”
When asked if he’s a fan of the genre and apocalyptic events Tyrese responds “I don’t really focus on the end of the world coming. No, not me. I love the world as it is. Beautiful weather out here in San Diego. No smog. I love life.”
Do you have any moments with the ice cream man he’s asked. “I do actually. I have a few moments with that guy with the long arms and jaw dropping. There’s some jaw-dropping stuff!”
What is he a flesh eater?
“He’s just a very scary looking thing. This guy is pretty damn scary. I was on the set. I didn’t really talk to him on any level…it was like ‘hey man, what’s up buddy…thanks!’ His costume was really scary on the set, it was pretty bad.”
On Comic-Con and his comic book Tyrese says “Last year I was here to promote ‘Death Race’ with Jason Statham. I have a lot fans that have been around for fifteen years but I have never had fans show up who say I love you so much I want to look like you. So when I see the comic book fans who not only love their favorite comic book characters but they are selflessly here dressed up in their costumes walking around as Batman, Spider-Man and all these different characters…I’ve never been exposed to anything like this. So it did something for me and that was the birth of my own comic book man. I did a huge deal over at Image Comics with Todd McFarlane and Robert Kirkman. I’ve been having so much amazing momentum.
The first issue has pre-sold over 20,000 copies of my debut comic book. Mayhem is a modern-day gun-slinging vigilante who seeks refuge in the basement of a church. His headquarters are underneath the basement of the church so spiritually this dude struggles with good and evil and he’s on a mission to take out his rival in the comic book named Big X. Big X is a crime boss, a crime lord, drug kingpin. So I’m on a mission to take this guy out and what’s gonna be revealed in a few issues later down the line is that Big X and Mayhem have a relationship of some sort that’s gonna shock people. Yeah it’s been amazing. I’m here, I was selling comic books yesterday for seven hours out there with the people. You know, you can do the Hollywood thing and show up at Comic-Con and speak on panels and do press junkets or you can be out there with the people. And so, I love being out there with the people. I love being exposed to that type of passion and just to see people putting my comic book in their hands. We’re selling 1500 to 2000 comic books a day and it doesn’t come out until two weeks. We got a special Comic-Con tribute cover for a tribute to Jack Kirby and it’s just been amazing.
The crazy thing is, to be honest, it’s almost been backwards for me because I got the likes of Avi Arad and Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane and Kirkman…these are all guys supporting and saying amazing things about my comic book already. These are legendary comic book gods and so now it’s like I got them so now we gotta get the fans to believe as much as they believe and so that’s why I’m here.”
