Scarlett Johansson has a seat following the Robert Downey Jr. interview. The multi-talented actress has the part of Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. “Black Widow” in the Jon Favreau-helmed film from Paramount Pictures.
When asked about whether she was familiar with the character prior to the film or was this whole world new to her she says “It was all new to me. I mean I had met originally with Jon and Kevin to kind of discuss a couple of the super heroines in the Marvel universe and Black Widow was one of them. But I didn’t really know about the character until I delved into it. Then I started looking at the suit and I was like ‘Oh my God! I gotta get into that.’ So it was a whole new world for me.
Scarlett’s asked about any other super heroes and responds – “Let me see if I can remember them…Scarlett Witch was one of them…Blonde Phantom? Is that the other one? Am I messing them up, because it is the Blonde Phantom right?
The reporter says he hasn’t heard of that one and she laughs – “Well then scratch that! That’s my own superhero!” everyone laughs at her lighthearted, funny responses.
Black Widow was Russian in the comicbooks and she’s asked how her character ties in with Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko a.k.a. Whiplash character.
“You’re going to have to wait and see, that would just be giving you too much. I will say that she’s covert and I think that she blends in. It’s not like she comes into the scene and it’s like ‘who’s that Russian chick?’
So you’re not using an accent?
“No, I think that would be a little bit…I don’t think how covert it would be if [Russian accent] you’re talking like this.” She pulls off quite a solid Russian accent. But I would of if I had to,” she says jokingly.”
I ask about the physical challenges involved.
“Sure, like I said, it’s all about the suit and certainly for me, as an audience member, I hate to watch those action sequences where you don’t see any of the actor’s face and it’s all in the back of their head and you’re going ‘that’s a terrible stunt double!’ I mean you get to know and actor and their mannerisms so for me it was very important to be able to do the stunt work and to be able to fight and feel the fight within me I suppose. So it was just a lot of training and stunt training and weight training and all of that kind of stuff. I wanted to be able to kind of look at something and say ‘alright I’m gonna beat the shit out of that person!’ and believe it is a challenge all on itself, especially when you’re five three and fighting someone who’s seemingly a giant I suppose. To be able to have conviction in that; it was just as much a challenge as the actual physical part of it.”
She’s asked if she was pitched the movie in the way that there will be sequels leading after this film.
“No, I wasn’t pitched it at all that way. I think that certainly Marvel about building these characters and building a fanbase around these characters and kind of expand their live in the movie world. These are characters they have a vested interest in. Obviously the fans have a vested interest in. It would be a shame to take a character like Black Widow who has been around for so many years and built a fanbase and can have so many different storylines and often interacts with many of the other characters in the Marvel Universe and certainly ‘The Avengers’ being one of those examples and not going ahead with it. I think it’s up to the fans you know. If the fans respond to the character…I think Marvel works very much that way. They’re fans themselves and so I think they will feel what the masses are craving.”
