It takes a man who set the world record for the biggest film of all time to top his own achievement. James Cameron's "Avatar" is on the border of becoming the biggest grossing film of all time. The fantasy sci-fi adventure has turned in around $1.841 billion vs. the $1.843 "Titanic" worldwide take. A remarkable achievement as the film has earned over $552 million in the U.S., heading towards the $600 million U.S. total of "Titanic" by adding another $36 million this weekend.
In second, Sony's "Legion" opened well with an estimated $18 million posted from 2,476 locations. The science fiction thriller stars Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Tyrese Gibson and Adrianne Palecki.
Third placed "The Book of Eli" showed a 48% change in its second weekend at play with $17 million grossed, bringing the total for the Denzel Washington starrer to over $62 million.
Fox's "The Tooth Fairy" comedy opener starring Dwayne Johnson as the title character, surprised with a decent pull of $14.5 million despite what looks to be an atrocious offering.
Ending off the top five films this weekend, Paramount's drama "The Lovely Bones" added $8.8 million, making the Mark Wahlberg-starrer's total over $31.6 million.
According to Media By Numbers, the top 12 films are up in comparison to last year but all reported films will show as down.
