Andrew Currie directs Carrie-Anne Moss in Fido
Sonja Bennett in the outrageous zombie comedy "Fido"

We interview Sonja Bennett as Tammy, the sizzling zombie of Tim Blake Nelson's character Mr. Theopolis.

Sonja's career is flourishing both in TV and on big screen. She stars next in the drama "Elegy" alongside Patricia Clarkson and Penelope Cruz.

Fido is a blast. Why shouldn’t it be? The film has redefined the zombie genre. Sure, there’s "Shaun of the Dead" but this is a different zombie completely; a collared one to be exact. Director Andrew Currie co-writes alongside his previous collaborator Robert Chomiak, not just a zombie film, but one of strained relations, acceptance and just simply that someone who appears dead outside may have more life within than apparently visible.

Question:

What were your reactions when you first heard about this project?

Sonja Bennett:

As soon as I heard ‘zombie’ I was expecting a bloody horror movie and then I read the script and discovered this funny, warm, quirky ( and bloody) story.  I’d never read anything like it.

Question:

Did you find it difficult to keep quiet all that time?

Sonja Bennett:

Yes..but not as hard as Billy Connolly found it!

Question:

How much of a time did it take to pile on the prosthetics and make up each time?

Sonja Bennett:

At the beginning of the shoot close to five hours but the makeup artists got quicker and quicker each day.

Question:

Can you talk a little about working with Andrew Currie. What does he bring to the set as a director in general?

Sonja Bennett:

When I was working with Andrew I thought, ‘this is an actor’s director ‘ but then when I saw FIDO on the big screen I thought,  look at this film, this is a visual director.   He brings a very relaxed energy to set.  I  can’t imagine how stressful making a big movie like FIDO would be but you’d never know it by talking to Andrew.  He makes it look easy.

Question:

Are you a keen zombie film/horror watcher or is that not really a favorite genre? What do you enjoy watching when you do get around to having some movie time?

Sonja Bennett:

I like horror movies that incorporate humour- like Fido does and the way that John Landis’ work does.   I watch all genres of movies though- sometimes I am in the mood to be challenged and sometimes I just want a good silly Hollywood blockbuster.

Question:

You starred in your father Guy’s 2002 Canadian release “Punch,” how has your father influenced you in your life and career?

Sonja Bennett:

Starring in Punch jumpstarted my career in a big way.  I was still in theatre school when I did it so when I graduated I already had a lead in feature film under my belt.  I was able to bypass the  auditioning for Girl number three phase- so I was very, very lucky.  Go, nepotism!

Question:

What are your future projects? What is Control Alt Delete about and what character do you play?

Sonja Bennett:

I am currently working on Battlestar Galactica and I have two films, Young People Fucking, and Control Alt Delelte coming out next year.

Control Alt  Delete is about a guy who gets alittle, ehem, too close to his computer.   I am basically in a love triangle between myself, Tyler Labine, and a computer.

Question:

Do you ever consider taking the wheel and directing at some stage later in your career?

I’m still trying to figure out this acting thing!

Our Review:

A riotously funny comedy from Canadian filmmaker Andrew Currie, “Fido” is in a league of its own genre-wise. It’s not often one can view a zombie film that is not overflowing with blood, rage and cuss words. Indeed, it’s even rarer to find a zombie living as a pet, butler or in some cases lover in a household.

Currie wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Chomiak with whom he had previously collaborated on the TV offering “Twisteeria.” Having spoken to Mr. Currie after laughing myself silly with this, I gained an even bigger appreciation for a project that has been gestating since 1994, yearning to bite into keen viewers like myself.

Filmed in the lovely Kelowna, British Columbia, the film takes place in the 1950’s in the small idyllic suburban town of Willard. The world has undergone a bizarre transformation – after passing through a space dust which brought the dead back to life, the zombie wars took place. The living prevailed and, thanks for the company Zomcon, the world has benefited from what could have been a greater disaster and tamed the beasts, so to speak.

The odd corporation has created a collar which holds at bay the zombie urge to chow down folks and leaves them as harmless as puppies. In fact, the more privileged citizens have taken ownership of zombie pets or workers.

These days, if you can afford a funeral for your family, you can call yourself a successful man. One such man is the self-absorbed Bill Robinson (Dylan Baker), more interested in his golf, work and funeral rights than his son Timmy (K’Sun Ray).

His serene existence is put to the test when wife Helen (Carrie-Anne Moss) decides that she can’t run the only household in the neighborhood without a pet zombie. Billy Connolly stars as the strangely lovable and grotesque “Fido” who wins the hearts of Timmy and Helen.

With the head of security Mr. Bottoms (Henry Czerny) living across the road and Fido’s collar malfunctioning and unleashing his killing urge, viewers are bound to be left in hysterics. There’s even a Greek playboy named Mr. Theopolis who has his own beloved, lipless undead hotty called Tammy (Sonja Bennett).

Downright sidesplitting and a must see.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies deliver the mail.

Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with a craving for human flesh. A war began, pitting the living against the dead. In the ensuing revolution, a corporation was born: ZomCon, who defeated the legions of undead, and domesticated the zombies, making them our industrial workers, our domestic servants - a productive part of society. ZomCon would like the people of Willard to believe they have everything under control… but do they?

Timmy Robinson doesn’t think so. At eleven, Timmy already knows the world is phony baloney - Mom and Dad just won’t admit it. Now ZomCon’s head of security has moved in across the street, and Timmy’s Mom refuses to be the only housewife on the block who doesn't have a zombie of her own. When she brings a zombie servant home, Timmy discovers a new best friend, and names him Fido. And even though Dad has a bad case of zombie-phobia, Timmy is determined to keep Fido, even if he does eat the odd person...

Sometimes, it takes a dead man to teach us all what it means to be alive.
