Our Review:
A riotously funny comedy from Canadian filmmaker Andrew Currie, “Fido” is in a league of its own genre-wise. It’s not often one can view a zombie film that is not overflowing with blood, rage and cuss words. Indeed, it’s even rarer to find a zombie living as a pet, butler or in some cases lover in a household.
Currie wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Chomiak with whom he had previously collaborated on the TV offering “Twisteeria.” Having spoken to Mr. Currie after laughing myself silly with this, I gained an even bigger appreciation for a project that has been gestating since 1994, yearning to bite into keen viewers like myself.
Filmed in the lovely Kelowna, British Columbia, the film takes place in the 1950’s in the small idyllic suburban town of Willard. The world has undergone a bizarre transformation – after passing through a space dust which brought the dead back to life, the zombie wars took place. The living prevailed and, thanks for the company Zomcon, the world has benefited from what could have been a greater disaster and tamed the beasts, so to speak.
The odd corporation has created a collar which holds at bay the zombie urge to chow down folks and leaves them as harmless as puppies. In fact, the more privileged citizens have taken ownership of zombie pets or workers.
These days, if you can afford a funeral for your family, you can call yourself a successful man. One such man is the self-absorbed Bill Robinson (Dylan Baker), more interested in his golf, work and funeral rights than his son Timmy (K’Sun Ray).
His serene existence is put to the test when wife Helen (Carrie-Anne Moss) decides that she can’t run the only household in the neighborhood without a pet zombie. Billy Connolly stars as the strangely lovable and grotesque “Fido” who wins the hearts of Timmy and Helen.
With the head of security Mr. Bottoms (Henry Czerny) living across the road and Fido’s collar malfunctioning and unleashing his killing urge, viewers are bound to be left in hysterics. There’s even a Greek playboy named Mr. Theopolis who has his own beloved, lipless undead hotty called Tammy (Sonja Bennett).
Downright sidesplitting and a must see.

Synopsis:
Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies deliver the mail.
Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with a craving for human flesh. A war began, pitting the living against the dead. In the ensuing revolution, a corporation was born: ZomCon, who defeated the legions of undead, and domesticated the zombies, making them our industrial workers, our domestic servants - a productive part of society. ZomCon would like the people of Willard to believe they have everything under control… but do they?
Timmy Robinson doesn’t think so. At eleven, Timmy already knows the world is phony baloney - Mom and Dad just won’t admit it. Now ZomCon’s head of security has moved in across the street, and Timmy’s Mom refuses to be the only housewife on the block who doesn't have a zombie of her own. When she brings a zombie servant home, Timmy discovers a new best friend, and names him Fido. And even though Dad has a bad case of zombie-phobia, Timmy is determined to keep Fido, even if he does eat the odd person...
Sometimes, it takes a dead man to teach us all what it means to be alive.
