Sex Drive is another from the Summit Entertainment lineup offered at Comic-Con 2008. A film which, quite honestly, looks absolutely riotous with raving Amish added into the mix! Read on...
Based on the book All The Way by Andy Behrens, the story follows lLoveable underdog IAN (Josh Zuckerman) is the last American virgin. At least that's how it feels to him now that he's 18, about to go to college, and losing girls to his 14-year-old brother. Ian's always been the nice guy, the best friend... never the boyfriend. But his luck finally seems to be changing when he meets DANIELLE. She's everything he's ever wanted in a girlfriend — fun, sexy, and she really likes him. There's just one problem. She lives in Knoxville. And he lives in Chicago. And she thinks he's the Brad Pitt lookalike he's pretending to be on Facebook. At the urging of his best friend, LANCE (Clark Duke), Ian decides to confront his fear of rejection when Danielle makes him the offer of a lifetime: "If you drive all the way for me, I'll go all the way for you."
In the spirit of such classics as AMERICAN PIE, THE SURE THING and SUPERBAD, this wild romp follows Ian, Lance and their third musketeer, the spunky and gorgeous tomboy, FELICIA (Amanda Crew), as they set out in Ian's older brother's beloved '69 GTO. Despite many hilarious setbacks on the road, including a stop-off at an Amish rave (who knew the Amish could party?), Ian finally meets his dream girl...; but things don't turn out quite as planned. Along the way, Ian discovers that while he's prepared to go the distance for sex, there might be something even better a little closer to home.
We speak to star Josh Zuckerman and, once you've read this interview, go ahead and read our chat with Clark Duke.
Question:
Is this your first time at Comic-Con?
Josh Zuckerman:
"Yeah it's really exciting, I have not but Clark Duke has. He's a regular here."
Question:
So tell us about the character you play.
Josh Zuckerman:
"There's some kind of Facebook...I think it might be Friendbook, I don't know what it is, but it's something in that vein. It's a profile where he has...the character I play Ian, has a picture of himself that's a little bit more macho than he in reality is and he uses that to speak to this girl 'Ms_Tasty' who also has a very beautiful picture, a very beautiful female picture. So she's communication with who she thinks is this very handsome male figure and, after a while, through this communication, she offers to have sex with him if he goes down to Knoxville where she lives.
First there's a lot of hesitation because Ian's not sure if she's actually a girl and that's really the big threat or the big fear. And his friend Lance [Duke] convinces him to do that and not only that but to steal his brothers car which is this what...pretty awesome 68 GTO Judge, cherry orange or something? And so we head down to Knoxville and along the way, run into a whole bunch of people and encounter some strange situations and a lot of hiccups on our way to the final bow in Knoxville, you know?
What I love about it, is that, and I think that was the intention to begin with, is that one the outside, and probably from the elevator pitch, it's just your basic teen road movie, or something like that. In fact, when we were filming in Florida, they were conservative there, so they didn't want us to...we had to change the title of our film to 'Untitled Teen Road Movie' as opposed to advertising we were filming 'Sex Drive.' But I think more than that, it has a bit of the heart, is pretty much the word, of the films of the eightees. I think that was always the intention with the writer and director Sean Anders and...John Morrison and Sean Anders co-wrote it...and something in the vein of those John Cusack films...'Better off Dead'."Specifically, they had talked about 'Sixteen Candles' as being an inspiration for it."
Question:
Have you taken a road trip with friends?
Josh Zuckerman:
"I have taken a roadtrip with buddies. I've taken a lot of trips with buddies but...I don't know why...I know I have, I'm trying to think and nothing really, immediately jumps to mind in terms of the stories. I've taken a lot of camping roadtrips to different national parts and what not and the food ends up getting all over the car; all over you and then you stop at the gas station and the squeegee's used for more than just the windshield."
Question:
This is based on the book by Andy Behrens "All the Way." Did you read it? Josh Zuckerman:
"I actually did read the book. I have never met Mr. Andy Behrens. He wrote the book which I think was very successful. I think it's the first book I'd seen that had a waterproof cover! When I heard that 'Sex Drive' was based on the book, I said 'Yeah, I'll go check it out' and I did read it because I thought there's some tidbits of information or some specifics about the relationships that I could expland upon or at least have in my back pocket. Sean's always feeling a little...Sean Anders who we spoken about...because it's not entirely loyal to the book at all, a lot things have changed.
The basic guidelines and template are there and I think that's fine. I think that because the book is...I would say the book is PG and the film is R...that's probably the most distinct way of saying it."
Question:
Did you get to drive the GTO? Josh Zuckerman:
"I did get to drive the GTO! However, I don't know if this is like breaking the myth or telling someone that the tooth fairy doesn't really exist, but I think we had about six or eight of those GTO Judges and one was a stunt vehicle and another was the hero vehicle. Some ran better than others, but they were all pretty much...I can't remember what they were underneath, but there were shells...they had the shell of the GTO Judge. It felt cool to ride nonetheless because the interior with the steering wheel was authentic, I think, to the Judge. I think that somebody said that if this movie makes a certain amount of money, they would buy Clark a Judge. I think Sean Anders said he would do that.
They were fun nonetheless."
