Dee Wallace Stone in "Cujo"

Question:

It’s been so long since the film was made, what special memories does Cujo hold for you?

Dee Wallace Stone:

Cujo is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career.  Working with a 4-year-old child and five dogs was exhilarating, exhausting, and empowering.  I have special memories of working with my husband Christopher Stone and watching the hot air balloons drift over our valley every morning at 5:30 or 6:00.

Question:

What was it like to reunite once again and work on this DVD?

Dee Wallace Stone:

I regret that I don’t get to spend more time with Dan Blatt and Bob Singer  Especially Dan.  He held my hand all the way through this amazing adventure.  And Lewis Teague.  I have a very respectful, loving place in my heart for him.

Question:

Looking back, what was the greatest challenge for this film? Were you and are you a Stephen King fan?

Dee Wallace Stone:

Making it.  Getting through it.  Pacing my energy.  It was an ongoing challenge 24/7 to honestly and fully stay in each moment.  Simply exhausting.  He’s a master of the horror genre.  Who couldn’t respect the embodiment of his work?

Question:

Can you please talk a bit about working with Danny Pintauro? When was the last time you saw Danny prior to this DVD, when he was a mere child?

Cujo

Dee Wallace Stone:

Danny Pintauro was the best child actor I ever worked with.  Most of our scenes were improvised around a very loose script and he was always in the moment and right there.  I was very blessed to have him to work with.  The last time I saw Danny before now, we were both appearing in a little independent film that was never released.

Question:

What did your daughter think of the film when she saw it?

Dee Wallace Stone:

She thinks I rock.

Question:

Your career credits are remarkable and one for many aspiring actors to look up to, what advice can you give to a young actor?

Dee Wallace Stone:

Make sure you know who you are before you begin because everybody will try to change you.  And keep loving what you do.

Question:

What made Lewis Teague the right director for “Cujo?” What unique quality gave him the right combination of horror and still a sense of feeling sorry for this sickly suffering St. Bernard?

Dee Wallace Stone:

Actually, Lewis Teague was brought in three days after we started filming.  Thank God.  His gentle guidance was invaluable on the set.  He had originally taken a look at it.  I’m not sure of the specifics about what happened, but I am thrilled that it turned out the way it did.

Question:

Where do you reside now? I read Mexico, is that correct?

Our Review:

What an eerie joy to relive the masterful horror of “Cujo” now in 25th Anniversary packaging and still as powerful as ever.

For those few unfamiliar ones, here’s the story breakdown of the thriller adapted from the Stephen King novel:

In rural Maine, Vic and Donna Trenton struggle to repair their crumbling marriage, while their young son Tad befriends a hulking, lovable, 200-pound St. Bernard named Cujo. With Vic away on business, Donna and Tad take their decrepit car to be fixed at the remote farm of their mechanic. As their aging Pinto sputters to a stop and dies, Cujo appears. However, the once docile dog has contracted rabies, and has transformed into a hideous, slavering, demonic killer possessed by almost supernatural strength...and unholy cunning. Cujo is a fearsome, spine-chilling tour de force from the most popular name in horror!

There are however less than ideal features included. With such a classic, there is no gallery; perhaps some deleted scenes or even the trailer for that matter.

May be an Anniversary Edition but definitely not one for a collector. Still, if you’re out to buy the film, you’re better off with this version than the original DVD release.

Includes:

- Audio Commentary by helmer Lewis Teague
- A three part documentary entitled “Dog Days: The Making of Cujo” with feedback from stars Dee Wallace Stone and Danny Pintauro as well as Director of Photography Jan De Bont, King’s Biographer Douglas Winter and Producers Daniel H. Blatt and Robert Singer.

- Peter Dimako, Editor in Chief.
