"Push" Interviews - Actress Camilla Belle
Push
Summit Entertainment's "Push"

What happens if you have a more pronounced ability to pick up psychic cues - to hear thoughts, move objects, suggest ideas to strangers? You start working for the Division and they teach you how to hone those powers to where you almost seem like a real life superhero. But then what happens if you want to leave the Division? The answer: it's going to be complicated.

NICK (Chris Evans), a young American expat with the ability to move things with his mind is hiding out in Hong Kong to avoid being placed under the control of the DIVISION, the American supernatural intelligence agency. He’s a loner who wants nothing to do with the government or the resistance movement trying to bring the Division down, until the day a young clairvoyant girl, CASSIE (Dakota Fanning), turns up on his doorstep, claiming to have had a vision of their future. Cassie sees that Nick is going to save her life … but if he doesn’t help her, they’ll both wind up dead. Nick agrees to follow along with her plan – trying to elude the evil CARVER (Djimon Hounsou) – until the plan leads him to KIRA, his long lost lover (Camilla Belle).

Paul McGuigan, known for his unique style behind the wheel of "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Gangster Number One," directs Summit Entertainment's Push, a sci-fi thriller which looks guaranteed to please. The multi-talented cast includes Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans, Camilla Belle and Djimon Hounsou..

First up, we spoke to an absolutely radiant looking Camilla Belle about her role in the film. Belle enjoyed recent box office success in "10,000 B.c." via Roland Emmerich. A film which opened with $35.7 million and ended up grossing over $94 milliion in U.S. sales.

Overall, Ms. Belle is a sweet, soft-spoken and certainly extremely attractive young woman who responded very well to questions offered.

Question:

You were in Brazil a month ago filming, how was that?

Camilla Belle:

"Brazil was incredible! I have absolutely no complaints about Brazil. I was there the whole month of April shooting a film called 'A Deriva,' in English it's called 'Adrift.' Heitor Dhalia is the director and it was in Portuguese and Vincent Cassel is in the movie, it was a really intimate movie and being able to work in Portuguese in Brazil was such a special experience, I've been really spoiled! I've been looking at scripts but nothing compares to the experience and it's hard to pick something else, but..."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Ms. Belle was speaking passionately about the expierence when, at that point some really rude woman at the table interrupts her mid-sentence and asks her to say her name and who she plays??? What the hell? That just irritates the life out of me. Lady, I realize you're trying to get all your questions in for your publication, (whatever spawn rented you as a rep) but learn some manners.

Camilla Belle:

"Sure, sure. In 'Push' I play a character called Keira and she's basically called a pusher, which is the same ability that Djimon Hounsou's character has, which is being able to manipulate people's thoughts and kind of somehow get into people's minds and alter their memories."

Question:

Did you do any kind of research or anything like that? Like paranormal?

Camilla Belle:

"I dabbled into it but at the same time, it's not, this film is very...it takes into kind of fantasy levels. It's not...I mean all of it's not based on fact. It kind of takes fact and takes it to another extreme and Paul [McGuigan] really played up the ideas and played up our abilities and our powers per se. But, the nice thing about it is that it's very human, very real. We're all really real people, it's not superpowers like Paul said before, he said that...like Chris's character, he has issues with abilities - sometimes he's really bad, sometimes he's really good. He starts getting better and better. Whereas Djimon and my character are really strong throughout the full film. So every character has different levels of their ability which makes it more real."

Question:

It's your first time in this genre, did you enjoy it?

Camilla Belle:

"I think so yeah, I did, I enjoyed it a lot because of the whole physical aspect of the film as well which was really fun with this whole fight sequence in the beginning and a lot of fighting, physical sequences towards the end, which is always fun. I was always asking Paul to give me more fighting sequences.

We had a really good time and I think what's fun is that we are playing characters that at the same time somewhat real, they're also...it's make believe. You know, it's the inner powers...I'd love to be able to be a pusher and manipulate people's thoughts; I can't do that. That's what's fun - to be able to play with that idea in the film."

Question:

On how she gets into character and finding something real to relate to.

Camilla Belle:

"I think that's the work in forming the character and approaching the character while reading the script. Paul made sure that we were all playing really real people that happened to have these abilities and then also shooting in Hong Kong for three months, I got there...I like going to set early just to really get into the environment and so i was there earlier than everybody else. I really spent time going to the markets, walking around Hong Kong by myself and really trying to soak in that culture.

I'd never been to Asia before. I had no idea what it was like and it was really shocking to the system; a majoy culture shock, but I loved it because when my character shows up, she doesn't know what she's doing either. Really felt more real, I could identify with her and kind of being on the run in Hong Kong and knowing where to go and who to trust and that to me, that's how you really felt there. You don't know anything.

Also, the language barrier was really apparent when I was there, our characters go through that too. With the abilities, that's kind of something you have to toy with. Djimon and I talked a lot about our abilities, because we have the same one, like 'what do we do something similar when we're pushing people?' but then you thought, you know, it's a character."

Question:

On the style of the film and Paul McGuigan

Camilla Belle:

"Well, I think Paul as a director has a very distinct style per se, what with his music and his camera work; even his wallpaper...He has a very specific way of making a movie and it's quite lyrical and a lot of the sequences are. He had never done a really action sort of movie before, so this is really new to him but I think he still gets to put a touch of himself in all the actors."

Question:

What attracted you to this role?

Camilla Belle:

"I think what I liked about Keira is that she really keeps you guessing, she's quite a myserious character throughout the entire film, even 'til the end you don't really know if she's on the good side, if she's on the bad side, who she likes. She has a relationship with Chris's character but does she really like him. She really keeps you guessing throughout the entire film which really intrigued me because I could really play with that."

Question:

What was the panel like?

Camilla Belle:

"It was really...it was a bit mad, there were so many people, and really loud. It was good though, they really responded to the film I think, which was quite exciting."
